A beginner’s guide

How a birth chart works

A daily horoscope is a weather report. A janma kundali is a map of the sky at your first breath. Here is how to read lagna, houses, planets, and dasha without the jargon getting in the way.

01 · Three different things

Horoscope, birth chart, lagna chart

People use these words as if they were the same. They are not. One is for the day. One is for your life. One is the same chart, read from the sign that was rising when you were born.

Daily horoscope

Rashifal

A short note for twelve zodiac signs. It usually follows the Sun sign (or Moon sign). Millions of people born across many years share the same daily reading. Useful as a tone for the day — not a portrait of you.

Janma kundali

Birth chart

The sky at the exact minute and place of birth: which sign was rising, where the Moon stood, and which house each planet occupied. Two people born the same day in different hours have different charts.

Lagna kundali

Lagna chart

The birth chart drawn from the lagna — the ascendant. House 1 is the rising sign. Every other house is counted from there. In Vedic astrology this is the main natal chart, not the Sun-sign wheel.

02 · What you need

Date, time, and place.

The date places the Sun and the slower planets. The time places the lagna. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so a chart without a birth time cannot say which house is first.

The place sets the local horizon and the timezone. Kathmandu and London on the same clock reading are looking at different skies. Name is only a label; the sky does not need it. The kundali needs the moment and the ground you were born on.

03 · The first house

Lagna, the ascendant

Lagna is the zodiac sign that was coming up on the eastern horizon when you took the first breath. That sign becomes house 1 — the body, the face you show the world, the way life starts for you.

If Aries was rising, Aries is the lagna and house 1. Taurus is house 2, Gemini house 3, and so on around the wheel until Pisces is house 12. The planets do not move in this picture; the counting starts from you.

Moon sign (rashi) describes the mind. Sun sign describes the soul’s heat. Lagna describes the life as it is lived. A full janma kundali holds all three. A newspaper horoscope usually holds only one.

04 · Twelve rooms of life

The houses (bhava)

Think of the chart as a house with twelve rooms. The lagna is the front door. Planets are people standing in those rooms. The room decides the topic; the planet decides the flavour.

05 · Nine grahas

The planets

In this system there are nine grahas: seven visible bodies and the two lunar nodes. A planet is not “good” or “bad” by itself. Sign, house, and company decide how it acts.

08 · How this chart is drawn

Sidereal, Lahiri, whole sign.

Western sun-sign columns use the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. A janma kundali uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. They have drifted apart by about 24 degrees — enough to change your sign.

Lahiri is the ayanamsa (the size of that drift) used across much of Nepal and India. Whole-sign houses mean the entire lagna sign is house 1; the next sign is house 2. The lunar node is the true node when the sky file includes it.

The chart is a map, not a verdict. Two people with the same lagna do not live the same life. Timing, choice, and the rest of the planets still have to speak.
